Early Beginnings
Bayport's origins trace back to three riverfront settlements named Baytown, Bangor, and Middletown. In 1856, a group of enterprising lumbermen, among them Socrates Nelson and David Loomis, platted the area for future development. These communities later merged in 1873 to form the Village of South Stillwater, which officially incorporated in 1881. To avoid confusion with the nearby City of Stillwater, the name was changed to Bayport in 1922.
Notable early settlers included:
- François Bruce, who built a home as early as 1842
- Ambrose Secrest, one of the area’s first permanent residents
- Norman Kittson, who established a trading post
- Joseph Perro, a riverboat pilot who acquired land along the St. Croix
