Early Beginnings
Bayport's origins trace back to three riverfront settlements named Baytown, Bangor, and Middletown. In 1856, a group of enterprising lumbermen, among them Socrates Nelson and David Loomis, platted the area for future development. These communities later merged in 1873 to form the Village of South Stillwater, which officially incorporated in 1881. To avoid confusion with the nearby City of Stillwater, the name was changed to Bayport in 1922.

By 1852, Bayport had its first steam-powered sawmill. Additional sawmills, such as the Tozer Mill, operated into the early 20th century, fueling economic development and shaping the town’s identity.
Industrial Growth
Bayport’s history is deeply tied to the lumber industry. In 1897, the Andersen Lumber Company, now known as Andersen Corporation, was founded and remains the community’s largest employer. The town also became known for boat building, producing notable steamboats like the Pauline and the R.J. Wheeler. The St. Croix Lake Ice Company,
established in 1903, shipped ice to regional packing houses and contributed significantly to the local economy. A streetcar line that connected Bayport to Stillwater further supported growth by providing reliable transportation for goods and people.
Becoming a City
Bayport was officially incorporated as a city in 1974. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of approximately 4,000, including a fluctuating population of up to 1,200 residents housed at the Minnesota Correctional Facility – Stillwater, located within city limits. Despite its growth and industrial roots, Bayport has maintained its small-town charm and strong community values.
Community Traditions
Bayport is known for its vibrant local events that celebrate history, patriotism, and small-town fun. Organized by the Hesley Jensen Post 491 American Legion, the annual Memorial Day Parade is a heartfelt tribute to veterans and the town’s rich heritage.
